Home security includes a range of products to help you protect your home from the natural elements, safety, and theft. Lightning arrestors for whole house, pool, patio, property entry alarms, entry access controls for people and pets, alarms detecting forced entry include motion, infrared and window breakage, and door and window opening. Fire, heat, smoke, carbon monoxide, leak or flood, detectors. Call buttons for child or assisted care. Driveway sensors, Cameras in locations for child (nanny or domestic help), supervision, visitor entry, or general security when away. All of these devices can be monitored through the house's main control system and the information and images can be monitored from any location with a computer and internet access.

The centerpiece of an integrated home is the Management System. The HSC Management System is a UL/FCC approved security system with the capacity to control any size residential application.  At the heart of the system is a programming engine that allows your HomeSmart Central installer to integrate lighting, temperature, a phone interface, and other key subsystems with the security of the home.  This flexibility is not found in any other security product on the market.

Enhanced Home Safety

Most traditional security systems are single purpose controllers.  They are designed to monitor points of protection for specific events.  When an emergency or security event occurs, the system sounds the alarm and informs a monitoring service*.  At HomeSmart Central we believe in the audible alert and central monitoring but we also believe the system should do more.  We feel so strongly that we have focused our main product offering towards our HSC Management System.  By integrating systems in the home we are able to have the system take action toward the events that caused the alarm.  For instance, in the event of a fire the HSC Management System can sound an alarm and notify a monitoring station.  In addition, the system can instruct the HSC Thermostats to shut down the home ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system and not distribute smoke and feed fresh oxygen to the flames.  At the same time the HomeSmart Central Lighting System can be instructed to turn all controlled lights in the home to 100% to help those in the home see their way out safely.  Finally, the HSC Management System can flash the front porch light to visually alert the authorities to the home.

For intrusion, the HSC Management System is part of a three-tier approach to security.  Any good security design focuses first on making the house the least desirable to target.  Quality locks and trimmed landscaping helps but nothing is as big of a deterrent as lighting.  The HomeSmart Central Management has the ability to intelligently control the lighting to make the house always look occupied.  Simple features like turning the front porch on at sunset and off in the morning can make a difference.  When the system is placed in Vacation mode a different lighting pattern can be implemented to make the home appear lived in even though you are hundreds of miles away.

If an alarm should occur it can be disorienting experience.  To help keep customers calm and informed the Alarm Notification Module can describe the alarm type and location in full speech.  In the middle of the night this can be a lifesaver to know where an alarm was activated.  Additional uses for the Notification Module include pool door and driveway notification.  A key function of a well-designed security system is keeping the user informed.

Energy Management

Energy management has become a focus in the United States thanks to shortages in California and additional shortages predicted for other states.  Saving energy with the HSC Management System becomes easy.  Best of all, it reduces the monthly electrical bill without sacrificing comfort or changing habits.  Temperatures can be automatically set back based on arming the security system.  Comfortable temperatures can be shifted based on outdoor temperature and/or humidity levels.  Outdoor temperature can be displayed on every thermostat.  Thermostats carry the Energy Star approval and include Energy Efficiency control to minimize the use of auxiliary heat.  Turn off unnecessary lighting at the touch of a button or send an ‘All Off’ command when the system is armed to Night mode.  Automatically dim outdoor floodlights during late hours to retain security while saving energy.   The options are limitless!

HVAC Control

The set back thermostat has been available for years, yet the majority of homes don’t use them.  In informal studies at HomeSmart Central we have found that our customers understand that they save a significant amount of money.  There is easily enough savings for the thermostat to pay for itself in under a year!  If that is so, why isn’t there a set back thermostat in every house in the United States?  At HomeSmart Central we have determined 2 reasons, first, intimidation.  Many digital thermostats are complicated and require directions.  We refer to this situation as the “12:00 VCR scenario.”  If it is too difficult the customer will not use it.  The second reason is comfort.  Most of our customers want to save money and energy but don’t want to sacrifice comfort. Most digital thermostats are based on a time clock.  Most lifestyles are not based on time.  It is nearly impossible to use a clock to determine when you will be home or away.  What if it is a vacation day or you come home from work early?

HomeSmart Central has solved both of these issues by integrating our HSC Thermostats with our HSC Management System.  This state of the art technique allows the security system and thermostats to work together seamlessly.  Simply choose your comfort, set back and vacation set back temperatures and we do the rest.  Now every time the system is armed to away you are saving energy!  When you return the thermostats quickly recover, making the house comfortable again.  The integration provided by HomeSmart Central is the key to offering you true energy savings without sacrificing comfort.  In addition, the seamless integration between systems provides a platform for the user to control HVAC from the phone, keypad, PC, and even includes options for the Internet or touch screens.

HomeSmart Central thermostat solutions are available for nearly every type of HVAC system available, including gas, heat pumps, radiant heat, multi-stage systems, zoned systems, and geothermal systems.   As long as the HVAC system does not require proprietary thermostats, which is rare, then HSC Thermostats will work.

Security Devices

            Sirens

Sirens are responsible for creating loud tones to draw attention to an emergency situation.  Each sounder is strategically placed in accordance with the National Electric Code (NEC) and designed to cover the entire home.  Special emphasis is placed on covering sleeping areas.  Most installations have a minimum of one internal and one external siren.  One is installed in a central location on the main floor, and the other is installed in the vent of the attic so it can be heard outside.

Magnetic Contacts

Magnetic Contacts are recommended for all entry an exit doors.  Contacts allow the HSC Management System to know when a door has been opened and confirm all doors have been closed before arming the system.  It is recommended to use contacts on all windows on the first floor and any windows on the second floor that are easily accessed from low rooflines.  This provides coverage of easy access points for an intrusion.  All difficult to access second floor windows are optional for security but may be considered for automation features with the HSC Management System.  Knowing windows are opened or closed can be used to turn of HVAC systems or turning on ceiling fans automatically.  These simple electromechanical switching devices cause alarm activation upon opening of doors and windows.  It is recommended that every door leading into the residence be contacted.  Since we only use recessed contacts, they are not visible when the doors and windows are closed.

            Glass Break Detectors

Glass break detectors are an excellent solution for coverage of windows and glass doors.  They can either replace contacts in windows or be used in addition to contacts.  HomeSmart Central recommends having at least one form of coverage.  Both approaches monitor for two different events during a window intrusion.  The glass break looks for the acoustical patters of breaking glass and a contact looks for physical window movement.  HomeSmart Central is highly trained in proper glass break placement to offer maximum coverage per detector and ensure proper installation.  The flush mount, unobtrusive detectors can detect breaking windows up to 25’ away.  These are available in wall or ceiling mount.  Designed for use with the HSC Management System.

Motion Detectors

Glass breaks and contacts are considered ‘primary’ detection devices.  When the home is targeted both detectors offer traps to deter the criminal at the earliest moment.  Motion Detectors are ‘secondary’ protection to act as a backup if the perpetrator is able to gain access to the home.  Motion detectors are placed on all main corridors in the home to prevent undetected movement.  Special focus is placed on corridors and/or stairs that provide access to the sleeping area.  Early detection is a key goal in security design.  Well-placed motion detectors are a reliable way to detect an individual moving shortly after he gains entry to the home.

Infrared Motion Detector
Infrared motion detectors are designed to detect movement of a heat source (humans, animals).  This motion detector covers an area 40’ x 40’.

Pet Immune Infrared Motion Detector

With this pet immune motion detector, you don’t have to worry about your furry friends setting off your alarm.  This sensor can be adjusted to accommodate animals up to 80 lbs.  Care is taken to place the detector in a location that an animal like a cat cannot fool the detector by getting too close.  HomeSmart Central invests in our staff to ensure they are fully educated on the detectors we choose.  The motion detectors we use have been selected after years of evaluation.  Since the same detectors are used in nearly every installation we understand the detectors’ performance.  Our experience aids us in choosing the correct location and coverage for each application.

Smoke Detectors

Most customers consider a security system for protection from intrusion.  While this is a good feature of our systems, the greatest benefits come from fire protection.  Integrating fire protection allows additional systems like HVAC and lighting to aid the process of ensuring the family is able to exit the home safely.  Depending on the installation and local codes the smoke system can either be provided completely by HomeSmart Central or installed as a redundant protection system to an existing smoke system provided by an electrician.  The HSC Management System monitors low voltage smoke detectors.  In the event of a fire, the fire company can be notified dispatched immediately*.  In case of power loss, the HSC Management System battery backup powers these low voltage smoke detectors.  We also recommend checking with your insurance company to find out if you can receive an extra homeowner’s insurance discount.

Heat Detectors

Smoke detectors monitor the level of particulate matter (smoke) in the air.  For most applications this is an effective detection system.  In some areas like the kitchen and garage it is not uncommon to have smoke in the air.  This can lead to unnecessary alarms.  A heat detector examines the temperature in the room as well as how fast the temperature is rising.  The combination of both pieces of information can be used to notify the HSC Management System of a fire condition.  A heat detector is not as sensitive as a smoke detector; however, it provides coverage in areas a smoke detector is not feasible. Add rate-of-rise heat detectors to the security/fire system for added safety.  Heat detectors are recommended for use in the garage and/or basement.

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide is an odorless gas that gas be lethal when not exhausted correctly.  HomeSmart Central recommends a Carbon Monoxide Detector in any home that uses fossil fuels for heating. HSC Carbon Monoxide Detectors, use exclusive industrial-grade electrochemical technology increases reliability.  Designed for use with the HSC Management System.

Natural Gas

Natural gas, like carbon monoxide, is a naturally odorless gas; however, it is often scented because the gas is highly flammable and explosive in high concentrations.  A gas detector is recommended for any home that uses natural gas for a fireplace, stove, oven, water heater or as home heating fuel.  HomeSmart Central Detectors monitor for all heating gases (natural, LP, propane, methane).

Barrier Bars

Sub-grade windows found in most houses with below grade basements are often difficult to monitor with traditional contacts.  Any easily installed and highly effective sensor is a barrier bar.  The bar must remain in place to prevent alarm.  Opening the window moves the bar, resulting in an alarm.  Because the bar would be highly visible to the potential intruder it discourages him from trying to enter.  Barrier bars provide excellent protection for basement windows and other hard-to-protect openings.  This spring-loaded plastic bar simply stretches across the opening of the window, and whether someone tries to break the glass or jimmy the lock open, they cannot physically get through the opening without knocking the bar out of place.  Barrier bars can easily be removed at any time when the alarm is not activated (i.e., to clean the window).

Temperature/Humidity Sensor

Temperature sensing can be used for convenience, security and automation.  In colder climates a sensor can be installed on the interior of the home to indicate when the temperature in the home is approaching freezing.  A sensor mounted outside can be used to display the outside temperature on all thermostats in the home.  The temperature data can be used to change temperature settings in the home or even control ceiling fans.  A humidity option can be added to a temperature sensor as additional information for automation routines.

Digital Temperature Sensing Unit

Adjustable temperature sensing unit monitors high and low set points.  Powered by the HSC Management System to maintain operability in event of power failure.  Temperature sensing unit can be used to monitor for freezing temperatures and notify a monitoring station* and/or a customer before the house freezes.

Surveillance Cameras

Video Source Combiner

Installations with multiple modulated video sources (cameras, DVD) the signals may need to be combined and inserted with additional video sources.

Video Channel Interface (Modulator)

This module creates a cable channel that can be viewed on any television in the home.  Sources include but are not limited to cameras, DVD, Satellite, and VCR.

External Black and White Camera or Color Cameras

The bullet camera (pictured) is the most popular camera style available because of the small size, flexible mounting options, low cost, and excellent picture.  This particular model is available in both color and black and white configurations.  Other cameras are available with different shapes, sizes and optics depending on the application.

Video Channel Filter

This module is inserted in the structured wiring cabinet on the cable feed.  In some cable systems it is necessary to use a filter to create a range of available cable channels.

Internet Camera Interface

This module allows up to four (4) house cameras to be viewed on any computer in the home.  If the home has a full time Internet connection the cameras can be viewed with any standard web browser.  This interface is required for viewing house cameras on a 6 or 10 inch touch screen.

Notification Module

The notification module provides annunciation of alarms or events in the home.  When used in conjunction with selected HomeSmart Central audio systems, the audio can be played over the whole house audio system.  For customers with central station monitoring an additional feature can be added to place microphones in the home.  The microphone allows monitoring of the home after an alarm for additional criminal activity or provides a method to communicate with an individual in the home during a medical situation.

The HSC Management System has the ability to generate speech.  The ability to generate speech over the phone is standard.  Speech in the home requires the addition of the Notification Module.  Messages like “Car in driveway” or “Pool Door Open” can be spoken based on system events.  In addition, in alarm the system can describe the type of alarm and location.  When used in conjunction with a monitoring service an operator can listen for criminal activity or speak to a patient during a medical emergency.  Requires a speaker and microphone to be installed.

Vehicle Detection

At HomeSmart Central we love to hear from our satisfied customers.  Nothing makes us feel better than to know that our customer took the time to tell us what a great experience they have had with our products.  No product we offer has received more accolades then a vehicle detector.  A simple probe buried next to the driveway that notifies you that a vehicle is moving on the driveway.  It is not a motion detector or infrared beam, so animals cannot set off the detector.  It only sounds when a large metal object moves on the driveway.  We like to call it the doorbell before the doorbell.  You know your guests have arrived a good minute before the doorbell rings.  The detector also adds an additional level of safety.  If the doorbell rings without the detector sounding it might be a good time to use the HomeSmart Central door phone and not answer the door.  A vehicle detector is an inexpensive solution that offers convenience and security features.

A probe buried next to the driveway to alert the HSC Management System there is a vehicle moving on the driveway.  The Management System can then sound a chime, speak, display a message on the keypads, or even turn on a light.  When a vehicle detector is teamed with HSC Management System additional features can be added including lighting control and camera features.  Turn on lights as you pull in the driveway at night.  Briefly change channels on the television to see a camera on the driveway.

Garage Door Operation **

The limitless flexibility of the HSC Management System offers our customers many convenience features.  A popular feature is monitoring and activation of garage door openers.  Put and end to the question, “Did I put down the garage doors?” immediately after settling into bed.  With the addition of the Garage Door feature into the HSC Management System we can greatly simplify the process.  As the security system is armed to Night the system can check the status of the garages.  If a door is open you will be immediately notified.  With 2 keystrokes the garage(s) can be lowered.  The system has the built in intelligence to inspect the garage doors after a short period of time.  If the door(s) did not properly close an error message is posted to ensure the house is safe for the night.

Garage Door Interface

Put an end to checking to garage door every night.  With the garage door interface the garage door(s) can be checked or even closed from any HSC Management System keypad.

Home Management System

The HomeSmart Central Management System is the cornerstone of the fully integrated home.  Built in UL Listed and FCC Approved Security.  Telephone interface with voice prompted menus.  Full integration with the HSC Lighting system and HSC Thermostats.  Built in logic allows HomeSmart Central to configure the system to match your lifestyle.  Simplicity is the key!  At HomeSmart Central we believe that anything more than arming your system is considered too complicated.  Leave it to us to make your home more efficient, convenient, and comfortable at the touch of a button.

Wall Mounted Touch Screen –10 Inch Color Display

A wall mounted touch screen with whole house control.  Includes control for security, temperature, lighting, and whole house scenes.  View full motion Ethernet cameras from within the home or over the Internet.  Photo feature allows storage of personal photos to be displayed as a screen saver.  Browse the internet on an integrated web browser.  Software based operating system allows future features and updates to be uploaded without changing hardware.

Flush Mount

A distinctive option in for the HSC Management System is the availability of a flush mount keypad.  The outer housing is made from aluminum and can be painted to match the room’s décor.  All buttons are clearly labeled to make operation easier.  A 2 line LCD is clear and backlit.

Large Button Keypad

For customers who desire larger buttons this keypad is the perfect choice.  2 mounting options, surface and flush mount.  All buttons are clearly labeled to make operation easier.  A 2 line LCD is clear and backlit.

Convenience

Think of a traditional good night routine.  Turn lights off one at a time, verify the garage doors are down, set back the thermostats, and make certain all windows and doors are closed.  Wouldn’t it be nice just to press a button and go to bed?  The HSC Management System can do all of that and more automatically! Sequences for ‘Good night’, ‘Good morning’, and ‘Entertainment’ are standard on all systems but this is just the beginning.  If you have a routine you would like included, let us know and we can design it.   Each routine does not have to be run manually.  Wireless transmitters, wall mounted keypads, or events such as time or arming the security system can all be used to run a routine.   Control lights based on time or even control them from a remote phone or any phone in the house.   Automated temperature control allows comfortable temperatures including nighttime set back and comfortable temperatures in the morning.

Wireless Keyfob

The HomeSmart Central Keyfob does for the home what keyless entry has done for cars.  Four (4) buttons are fully programmable to customize their function to your needs.  The top two buttons are labeled with an open and closed padlock, which is traditionally used for arming and disarming the system.  The lower two buttons are a light icon and an asterisk.  The light button can control an individual light or a large number of lights.  The choice is yours.  The asterisk is a fully customizable feature, which, in the past, has been programmed for a number of features including panic, garage door open/close, and exterior lighting.

Web Control Software

The Internet has changed the way people shop, work, and even relax.  Home control is a logical progression.  Web Control Software permits the user to check status or control the home in real time.  An integrated camera module allows a remote connection to view or record cameras in the home.  A ‘rules engine’ permits the user to select from pull down menus simple events and determine how the Web software should react.  An example: “When the front door rings: record the front door camera for 3 minutes”.  The recordings could be viewed locally or from a remote location.  Software requires a constant Internet connection and Windows 98SE, 2000, or XP Professional.

Monitoring Services*

A security system’s primary feature is notification of an emergency condition in the home.  The HSC Management System adds the additional benefit of automatically taking action in the home based on the type of alarm.  The final piece in a complete security plan is having the local authorities respond to the emergency.  A system is not permitted to call the authorities directly so a monitoring service is used.  The monitoring service receives a complete report from the HSC Management System describing the type of alarm and the location.  An operator is responsible for confirming the alarm report and dispatching the proper authorities.  Additional services are provided by the monitoring service including maintenance of the system.   Built into the HSC Management System is diagnostics evaluating system performance.  If a portion of the system is reporting a trouble condition the monitoring station receives the report and a technician can be dispatched.  Monitoring is far more than just calling the police - it is a critical piece to any home security plan.

Who’s minding the house when you’re away?  For about the same price you pay to connect to the Internet, you can keep your family and your house safe with 24-hour monitoring.

*          Requires a two-way voice enabled monitoring agreement with a security monitoring company.

**        Requires Liability Waiver

Surge Protection

Most customers don’t have a surge plan for their home.  It is our job at HomeSmart Central to help our customers protect their electronic investments.  When most customers think of surge they think about naturally occurring surges like lightning strikes, snowstorms, and line faults.  Interestingly, this only accounts for a portion of all surges.  Surges can occur from heavy load switching such as a motor starting, internally generated short circuits, or electric utility restarts.  Because the power distribution system is interconnected, activities of other customers can generate surges in a neighbor’s electrical system.  Even devices in the home can generate surges.  To prevent surges from damaging equipment, HomeSmart Central can help.

Preventing damage from surge is a two-stage approach. The first stage is to help reduce the damage potential of surges entering the home.  A whole house surge interface is used to route surges harmlessly to ground.  A recommended option is to add additional protection for phone and cable.  For sensitive devices in the home a point protection strip or an electrical outlet with integrated surge protection is recommended.  This provides protection from surges created within the home.  In addition, the point protection adds extra protection against surges after they have been greatly reduced by the whole house surge module.
